What is Organic Cotton?

Fibers can be considered certified organic if they are grown without using synthetic chemicals, fertilisers, or GMO’s (Australia Certified Organic 2021).

Beneficial to both humans and nature, organic cotton is a sustainable choice for your transeasonal wardrobe. It’s an anti-allergen fiber, meaning you don't have to worry about chemicals commonly added to traditional cotton and other non-organic textiles which are common causes of skin irritation and allergic reactions.

The Organic Cotton Difference

How does organic cotton differ from regular cotton? Well, there's a few important things to know. Organic cotton is handpicked, whereas regular cotton has such high demand that it is usually machine-picked. As a result, it has longer fibers, creating a softer texture and feeling against your skin. Once you’ve tried organic, it’s difficult to go back to standard cotton.

To keep up with demand, organic cotton is often farmed with a huge overuse of pesticides which damages the soil and prevents other crops from growing, detrimental to the environment. Grown in the same soil over and over again means more water is required and wasted to grow these crops, too. Organic cotton altogether uses 91% less water than regular cotton, making it a great alternative, with less damage to soil and greenhouse gas emissions.
